Rod McKuen – Oliver Twist lyrics
O-L-I-V-E-are
Oliver twist yeah

You ought to see Oliver go go Oliver
You ought to see Oliver twist

He can't mow the grass
Falls asleep in grammer class
But he's a sight on Saturday night
You ought to see Oliver go go Oliver
You ought to see Oliver twist

He can't drive like Jim
Every tree bumps into him
But on the floor he makes 'em roar
You ought to see Oliver go go Oliver
You ought to see Oliver twist

He can't write a letter
'Cause he can't spell
The girls, they want to wear his sweater
To catch the eye of that a fabulous guy
He can't sing on pitch
But he's a panic with his twitch
He raises dickens with them chickens
You ought to see Oliver go go Oliver
You ought to see Oliver twist
Come on go...

He can't write a letter
The cat can't spell
The girls, they want to wear his sweater
To catch the eye of that fabulous guy
He can't sing on pitch
But he's a panic with his twitch
He raises dickens with them chickens
You ought to see Oliver go go Oliver
You ought to see Oliver twist
You ought to see Oliver twist
You ought to see Oliver twist

Several things to point out, McKuen was very precise in his language and when he calls this Oliver a "fabulous" guy, he chose the word because a fable is mostly falseness and fairy tale, with little substance. I saw him perform live several times and he modified the lyrics in the last verse each time. "The girls are all wearing sweaters, to catch the eye of that ... " followed by " He can't sing on pitch, But on the floor he makes 'em itch". Looking back on high school years from the perspective of 50 years later, this song rings truer than it ever did, except the kids don't know how to dance the twist, so don't listen to the song very much. The critics have always panned McKuen, but I hear jealousy at the millions of fans and millions of dollars he got and they never did. And I never consider the opinions of critics, I make my own.
