Rush – The Garden lyrics
Verse
In this one of many possible worlds
All for the best, or some bizarre test
It is what it is and whatever
Time is still the infinite jest

The arrow flies when you dream
The hours tick away
The cells tick away

The Watchmaker keeps to his schemes
The hours tick away
They tick away

Chorus
The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect
So hard to earn, so easily burned
The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect
So hard to earn, so easily burned
In the fullness of time
A garden to nurture and protect

Verse
In the rise and the set of the sun
To the stars goes spinning
Spinning 'round the night
Oh it is what it is and forever
Each moment of memory aflight
The arrow flies while you dream
The hours tick away
The cells tick away
The Watchmaker has time up his sleeve
The hours tick away
They tick away

Chorus
The measure of a life is a measure of love and respect
So hard to earn, so easily burned
In the fullness of time
A garden to nurture and protect
(Its a measure of a life)
The treasure of a life is a measure of love and respect
The way you live,
The gifts that you give
And the fullness of time is the only return that you expect

Bridge
The future disappears into memory
With only a moment between
Forever dwells in that moment
Hope is what remains to be seen
Forever dwells in that moment
Hope is what remains to be seen

Solo

Outro
In the fullness of time a garden to nurture and protect
(Its a measure of a life)

It's a measure of a life

This is a very metaphysical song imho, not unlike rush to produce and it being the last track on what is supposed to be their last album it isn't surprising that it one of, if not the best song they have yet to produce. I feel that it relates to the struggles in life that you go through, that only act as experience and add meaning to your life giving your existence meaning and providing a fullness/wholeness to life. This fullness/wholeness is the garden that you must nurture and protect. I also believe this is a very personal song for rush as I feel like rush is expressing this view as a message telling us that our life is measured by how much love and respect we both earn and give to the rest of our fellow humans. That they are sharing this with us as a result of decades of experiences all converged into the most meaningful 7 minutes of my life.

The song spins me into a slow uncontrollable mood with memories rising …it’s a sad melancholic song and makes more than my sentimentality emerge to full flow….Only Geniuses can write such lyrics…The THREESOME R U S H are more than Geniuses…they are Heaven sent…as the pulveriser has flown away and later perched in his garden…the TWOSOME now left standing …with a whirlwind of memories and their library of songs that rocked my soul…Amen

Well you see I feel this is a purely physical or you say scientific song.: P. I mean many possible worlds. Yup multivariate. Some bizarre test. Ya may be referring to computer simulation that our universe might be. The arrow of time fly when you dream. Dream here might mean living. Which equals to increasing the entropy or passing a moment. Future disappeared into memory. And that forever dwells in the moment. This is according to relativity. We live forever in the time that passed. So see. That's quite a scientific lyric. But whats important is. Even after all that science and all. We still are human. And for us. Respect and love are the most important. So chearo.
