SafetySuit – These Times lyrics
These times will try hard to define me,
And I'll try to hold my head up high.
But I've seen despair here, from the inside,
It's got a one track mind.

And I have this feeling in my gut now,
And I don't know what it is I'll find.
Does anybody, ever feel like, you're always one step behind

Now I'm sitting alone here in my bed,
I'm waiting for an answer I don't know that I'll get
I cannot stand to look in the mirror, I'm failing
I'm telling you, these times are hard but they will...

And I know there's someone out there somewhere
That has it much worse than I do.
But I have a dream inside, a perfect life, I'd give anything just to work
It's like I'm only trying to dig my way out of all these things I can't
And I am,

Sitting alone here in my bed,
I'm waiting for an answer I don't know that I'll get
I cannot stand to look in the mirror, I'm failing
I'm telling you; these times are hard but they will pass

They will pass {x2}

These times are hard but they will...

These times will try hard, to define me.
But I will hold my head up high

Sitting alone here in my bed,
I'm waiting for an answer I don't know that I'll get
I cannot stand to look in the mirror, I'm failing
I'm telling you; these times are hard but they will pass
And I know there's a reason, I just keep hoping it wont be long 'til I see
It,
And maybe if we throw up our hands and believe it,
I'm telling you these times are hard, but they will pass

They will pass {x2}

These times are hard but they will pass

    My ex girlfriends parents grew up with money where I was raised to enjoy chasing grasshoppers and toads and building forts in the woods. Though many of her parents well trusted friends have told them many a time that we are a good couple her parents fail to see the good in me. Since my job requires me to come home and wash my hands every night and scrape the dirt from under my fingernails they see me as nothing more than a lost cause. That I would never have anything and would never amount to anything. But I was always taught that happiness wasnt about the amount of money in your pocket but rather the amount of happiness there is in your life. So in essence this song, to me, is about someone constantly being criticized no matter how hard they work at what theyre trying to accomplish and them trying second best to their damndest not to fall into believing it.

    People are in pain for situations they did not cause and the problems keep getting more difficult to handle. They feel guilty because they know others may be worse off but it is their pain, situation, problem and they can't find a solution. It feels so desperate sometimes and completely unmanageable so they feel like a failure for not being able to figure it out and make it better. The message is though to hold on to hope and realize nothing lasts for forever and this too will pass.

    I take it to mean that he is out of work, like so many now, going for interviews, waiting to hear back for an answer they may or may not give about the job, and feeling like a failure from all the "nos" he has gotten so far, and how the longer he is unemployed, the farther the chance is he will be hired (one step behind). "i'd give anything to work," he says outright, to dig his way out of the money problems. And how this all is bearing down on him, and his life is a shambles right now because of it, he knows that it won't last forever, and perhaps he is at least able to eat and have a bed to wait in, there are those who have not enough or a home, so feels bad for being depressed about his situation when others suffer much more. I think this reflects our nation's high unemployment and a poor global economy, how it is effecting the average person.

    That these times may be really hard right now with whatever you are battling, because everyone battles something. But don't worry given enough time the pain lessens and it becomes bareable and then you pick up the pieces and keep going with your head held high. You can't give up. Be strong. You may feel like your "one step behind" or failing but the evils of this world are trying to take you down, don't give into them, your better then they are and you have so much to live for. The pain you feel will try to take over you and to make a name for you and define you but don't let them because over time it will get better. I promise!
