Sara Bareilles – Gravity lyrics
Something always brings me back to you.
It never takes too long
.
No matter what I say or do, I still feel you here 'till the moment I'm gone.

You hold me without touch.
You keep me without chains.
I never wanted anything so much than to drown in your love and not feel your reign.

CHORUS
Set me free, leave me be. I don't want to fall another moment into your gravity.
Here I am and I stand so tall, just the way I'm supposed to be.
But you're on to me and all over me.

You loved me 'cause I'm fragile.
When I thought that I was strong.
But you touch me for a little while and all my fragile strength is gone.

CHORUS
Set me free, leave me be. I don't want to fall another moment into your gravity.
Here I am and I stand so tall, just the way I'm supposed to be.
But you're on to me and all over me.

I live here on my knees as I
Try to make you see that you're
Everything I think I need here on the ground.
But you're neither friend nor foe though I
Can't seem to let you go.
The one thing that I still know is that you're keeping me down
You're keeping me down, yeah, yeah, yeah
You're onto me, onto me and all over

Something always brings me back to you
It never takes too long

Gravity, a force that pulls down, represents the raw emotion that keeps someone from letting go. The idea behind the song is to convey the simple truth that love cannot be completely destroyed, memories are what "always bring me back to you." A classic portrayal of feelings built up after a beak-up.
"You hold me without touch. You keep me without chains." This shows how love, an intangible power, captures a heart without physically holding it back. The resentful love a woman has ties her to a man's "rain." His sadness is the cause of her pain. The tone of the song reveals the vulnerability she feels around him. "But you touch me for a little while and all my fragile strength is gone." The passion lost becomes regret making it harder to move on.
"Set me free, leave me be. I don't want to fall another minute into your gravity" is the frustration felt when its time to let go. The ending verses create the inevitable feeling that sharing a relationship with someone leaves an everlasting bond. This song speaks to those who know what it's like to have a love so real and then having to let it disappear.

This is a song of struggle to let something "go" - she loves him, she wants him, she needs him, but she knows he is no good for her. He doesn't raise her up and make her feel loved. He makes her feel insecure and pulls her down. She can't "grow. " but she loves him anyway. And he won't let her go - he provides false hope. He pulls her in and out of the relationship. He loves her momentarily, then ignores her, then loves her again when he notices her wavering. It is the worst kind of "love" there is.

Ok so guys aren't supposed to be emotional, but this song reminds me of the one I'll never be over. The amazing woman who made life feel like a dream come true, the woman that makes my heart sing just by looking at her pictures. I miss you woman god I miss you. There will never be another in my life that can fill the hole in my heart since you've gone away.

This song is what my life is right now, plus between the lines. These two songs define how much dark my relationship is.
It's like, "yeah, get over you, it's easy, just meet other girls, they'll probably help me and I'll learn to love another one" but then, when I try to talk to other girls, nothing, it's just pitch black game.
I got so used to her, she was almost everything that I knew about a friend, a best friend, and a partner, and when she left, it was so messy.
And I hate it, I hate the memories, I almost regret everything, and think, s*t, I'm over it, but one thing, just one wind of memory brings me back to square one. And I'm just messed up all-over again.

This is a woman who has been in a controlling relationship and is trying to break free. He holds her without touch, without chains, meaning not physically. She has a false bravado which makes her think she is strong enough to leave him. But her insecurities keep bringing her back to him and whatever fragile strength she has gained disappears. She is very conflicted in wanting her independence but not wanting to be alone.

This is easy. Been there and done that. This person was in a relationship with a person he/she loved dearly. The other person was basically playing with them. But no matter how much he/she got played they still felt so strongly for the person. Everytime he/she tried to act strong and stand tall like they were over the person, the person saw right through them and with the power they have over him/her they made them fall again. Really sad! Cause no matter what he/she does this person is keeping them down. They won't let them go to find love that is like the love he/she has for them!

Gravity is a law of nature, something you can't overcome. The lyrics are expressing the power this person has over her. No matter how many times she thinks she's moved on, she can't stop herself from returning to that person. And the person doesn't have a genuine love, but loves her because they see her as weak, which is what they make her. She tries to make them see that although she keeps returning, she knows they're not right for her, but she can't overcome the power her love has over her. It's like gravity because it is a law of nature for her, she can't let go.

This song is for my ex-boyfriend, my one true love, my lost love. It's been almost 6 years since we broke up but I still love him. When he stopped loving me, it broke me and scarred me. I have long since moved on, and was able to bury the pain under layers of cynicism. And just when I think I have recovered, there are just some things that reminds me of him, a movie, a joke, a song, a memory, that brings the pain back and my heart remembers and wants to be with him and it hurts me all over again. I had been in different relationships since then, but none worked out because I have no heart to give anymore. Probably haven't met the one who will mend my heart. This song has become my mantra that I need to be free of him, that I need to let go, that I need to forget. Damn Sara B for writing this song and reminding me of him :(

When I listen to this song, it reminds me of my relationship with my ex. Me and him have this connection that somehow always seems to come back without our intentions. I love him to death but I can see me with him at this time in my life, but for some reason I just can't let him go. His touch on my life has changed the way I used to see him in the hallways. This song brings back memories where it was just me and him, the moon and the stars, talking to him like there was no care in the world. Wonder when his gravity will pull be back yet again and pull us together.

This song describes the relationship that I am in. Even though we do not doubt our love for one another, everyday with him is a struggle. His darkness, anxiety, overbearing and critical ways drags me down. I feel heavy, weak. I almost feel like he needs someone down and blue to feel better about himself. His arrogance hides his insecurity. I have tried so many times to leave this dysfunctional relationship, but something always brings me back. A look, a gesture, a kind word, an intense embrace that is never there when things are ok. I can't let go, no matter how frustrated, because I know the potential we have if he would lighten up, see the light, feel my love and affection.

I think the song means that a girl has really fallen badly for a boy, but he either a.) is just faking along, or b.) doesn't know her at all. A. Is when he's just thinking that this isn't so serious, and B. Is when a girl notices him, and can't get her mind off of him. However, he doesn't know her.
She's just trying to get over him and not think about him at all, but it's not really working, because she's fallen for him bad, but he doesn't, and that makes it hurt even more.

This song is about an eating disorder. It holds her back and drags her down but she can't get rid of it. The gravity is that she can't escape this force that keeps her without touch or chains. This struggle is knowing that the eating disorder is bad for her but she can't get away from it because even though it doesn't tie her up with chains, it's a force, like gravity, that does hold her. The eating disorder loves her because she's fragile, where someone not susceptible to it does not feel this force or can resist it. This is a very real force that takes hold of lots of individuals who then cannot escape. It is possible to get better though, but you may need someone to lift you up or pull you out of it.

For me, this song is like. The girl knows the boy is nothing like she had imagined his prince to be. But she still can't deny that she is falling for him. She is struggling. Telling her not to think about him, but all in vain. She is losing to herself. She wants to be freed from this agony, she wants not to think about him. She wants to believe that he is not the one. But she just can't. Her feelings for him, are too strong to leaving his thoughts behind.

I first heard this song over a year ago. Recently, I separated from my partner of 30 years. That's right - 3-0-. Due to time and being strong personalities, we know all too well each other's strengths and weaknesses. Whether we reconcile or not, we are both aware that we will always have a hold on each other because we have spent over half our lives together. We still spend time together but we are better partners apart than together. And, as hokey as it sounds, I don't foresee another relationship following this one because something always brings us back.

This song is about a love that you cannot get rid of. This is a love that no matter how long you have broken up with your lover or are separated, the love for the other will not go away. You are constantly reminded of how they loved you and treated you which makes you feel trapped in their "gravity" they do not want to have the feeling of attachment to this person anymore but they cannot help it. They are asking to make it easier to break them away from the other and to set them "free. " the gravitational force of love is the most powerful force in the world, which is what is happening in this situation. The person misses the other.

I dated a man for 7 yrs and he lived 1000 miles away. Over the years we spent 4 days and one night together. He kept me from killing myself and vice versa. We become sober and found god. We broke up for a bit had kids and became single parents. Fell in love again still so very far away. My heart hurt so much when we hung up I fell into a major depression cycle and almost had to be hospitalized. He hurt the same and left me so he could move on. Boone we found ever matched the intensity and raw love we had. 7 yrs and one night of s** lol it was perfect. But I pushed him away and realize that I don't hurt anymore. I love him but I'm afraid to fall in love with him again because it hurts to much. I have to let go or I'm afraid my son will lose his mom to mental hospitals. This song makes me sob until I have no tears it feeling. Soulmates can make it break you. Sometimes ur happiness is not worth the pain.

I think it can also be put into the context of an ex who continues to call and take advantage of someone who is obviously still in love with them, even though the relationship is over. We hate to admit it but sometimes those that we love take that love and use it to their advantage. The person which tells the story of the song knows on some level that the person is using them and that adds to the sadness of the song.

I honestly never ever thought about it the way everyone else seems to. The first time I heard this song I felt it was about someone who had died and how difficult it is to become weighted down by the grief and sucked right back into the sadness of losing him/her. Waking up each day, painting on that smile and wanting so bad to break free from the chains. But the person continues to consume your thoughts and no matter how hard you try, you can't think of anything else. You just need to let go.
Maybe I just wanted it to be about this because for some reason this song explains my feelings towards someone who I lost almost 6 years ago.

This song for me, means to be in love with someone you can't really have and still you can't seem to let them go. "you hold me without touch. Keep me without chains" that means that person never really made an effort to keep her/him down but its her/his love for him/her that is keeping her down and gravity represents the emotion you feel around them.
I'm going through something similar to this and it just kills me every time I listen to this song.
Just love sara's voice and songwriting abilities.

For me. It a song that making me cry. Lol. Cause what the lyrics said is so true for me. "something always brings me back to you, it never takes too long" there's a person in my life, who makes me smile. Everytime I talk to him. He's a good person, gentle, but have flaw also. He's always makes me want to hold him. One thing that making me keep my feeling from him, that he have someone in his heart. So I leave him. Haha and believe it or not. He said he like me when I said I'm about to leave him. But he can't choose me. Cause, he loved his lover. Tho he don't want me to leave him too. He's such a jerk hahaha and I end up stay beside him after that. But not too long tho. Cause I don't want to see him and his lover anymore. And I leave him completly now. I try to not care about him anymore. Tho it's hard. Cause I feel so lonely atm. And this song just making me remember all those memories again.

This song makes me think of someone special to me. He is out at sea, in the navy. He keeps in touch but usually only through email. He came into my life so fast and then had to leave for his deployment. We grew strong feelings for each other but he had to leave, and when he left, he left "us" up in the air. So I sometimes get confused on what to do. I wanna be with him. But him leaving us up in the air leaves me unsure of his desires. If I don't hear from him I seem to get sad and let him go to an extent. But then when he surfaces. There I go again. He's gotten such a big part of my heart. I can't seem to let him go. I don't know if I should. I desire for him to see how I feel for him. Was all that I typed a bunch of bunny trails? Haha I don't know. Bottom line. This song makes me think of him. When I start to fade away, a memory or an email or phone call quickly brings me back. Can't wait for his return. : '(

This is what I have done to my wife. It wasn't intentional. I promise. It was only because I love her so much. But I drove her to this point where she feels that she is no longer in control. I never wanted to hold her down. I mentally abused her. And for this, she cannot forgive me. She wants to be free from me now. I have begged and did what I thought I could do to change but she says it is too late now. And me trying to save our marriage she sees as more "gravity". I have to let her go and I don't know how because I know our love is real. She is the best person I have ever known. Too bad I didn't show her all the time. So for her freedom, I have to pay the price. I deserve it. She cannot live with me and I cannot live without her, so I'm not going to. I love you baby. That was never a lie. I'm sorry I brought you to this point. Gravity: a force between two objects.
I have the power to take one of those objects away. You can be free. I love you.

My relationship with my daughter's father. After giving him endless amounts of chances and being left with no home and having to start all over again with my two kids I am finally over him. I will finally live only for my childrean without caring what this does or how it affects him or what he's doing. I am finally doing okay in life and I have this future ahead of me. I am a stronger woman. I am stronger than I had ever been. I am free.

There's this guy, who I love with all my heart, but after 6 months of dating he doesn't have romantic feelings for me, just that of friendship. I want him in my life more than anything, but friendship isn't enough for me. The confusion and hurt caused by this situation makes me feel like he's the one I will never get over. I miss him so much. Everything reminds me of him and it just brings me back to all that we shared together.

I just so love this song. I don't have to describe what I'm going through using the written words, this song is enough. It explains everything may it be about my love life, my childhood experience that's haunting me every night and others. I hate the feeling.
There's just something about the song and the way sara sings it. It gives me an unexplainable feeling. Even though this gives me "bad memories" everytime I listen to it, but I still love it even more.

This song reminds me of this very special person that I keep in my heart and mind forever. He may not know that I love him so deeply and I don't have any clue if he feels the same way I do. I can't forget this person no matter what I do. I think about him every night and day. By the time that I wake up in the morning and close my eyes to sleep at night, he is just always in my head. I made a promise to this person and I am keeping it till the end. I am hoping that he is happy wherever he is.

I absolutely love this song. It's one of my favorite songs after hearing it one time. From the melody and her voice makes everything flow together beautifly. So many of us can relate to it in some form or fashion.
Many look at it as just about romantic love, but it can be anything that we can live without. But we just "can't". This song can have a meaning to anyone from relationships that aren't going anywhere. Substance abuse and anything that keeps us in an addicted state of anything that brings us down.

I am a recovering prescription drug addict and watching Kayla dance as the addict and Kupono dance as the addiction makes me cry to this song every time I hear it. The relationship between the addict and the addiction is so terribly strong and they show us that relationship so well. Once you're addicted, your never free again. If you're lucky. You're granted a daily reprieve. Make the best of each one, if you're not careful. It may be your last.

Being bulimic, this song is pretty deep for me. It reminds me of my daily struggle to live a normal life but always being brought back to this addiction I have with trying to find my "perfect". I know it is unhealthy and going to ruin my life but without it, I don't feel like I can ever be completely happy. I feel better after I purge but only for a bit. Then I am back to hating myself for doing it. But I always end up "coming back to it".

This relationship is not moving forward in the direction desired by her, but she is so thankful to have had his love, this love is so hard to let go of despite the need to move on. She has to let him go and move on with her life because it is what is best and it is so hard, she may have tried many times but couldn't just let go knowing he was such a wonderful man. In a sense, he held her back for his own selfish reasons too and then after so much heartache they both had to be set free. She will not forget what they shared, neither will he but it's time to move on, and let go for good. It's better to have loved and lost then to never have loved.

Girl falls in love with a guy who may love her back. But, there is a gap in each of their desires. The girl could spend the rest of her life loving this guy, he could love her but doesn't feel worthy.? He unintentionally breaks her heart over and over again talking of the far away future when all she wants is the present. So, she's got to take a step back. She cannot allow him to hold her heart captive and expect her to stay stationary long enough for him to realize this is about the now, not the later.

This is a very soulfull break up song. The point is, she loves him, but she doesn't want to, she's hurting. "I never wanted anything so much. To drown in your love, and not feel your RAIN." The love is the obvious love she feels for him, the rain is the pain that she had in the relationship.
So she loves him, but elements of their relationship hurt her. It seems like they've been broken up for a while and she is trying to get away but can't because she loves him. Then he keeps affirming that she can't rely on him, he's ambivalent to her. "You're neither friend nor foe though I can't seem to let you go."
The end of the song is somewhat hopeful, "you're onto me, onto me, and all OVER." She may be able to get over him. Of course, she has to go back on that a little bit by expecting to be drawn to him again. "Something always brings me back to you. It never takes too long." This is a beautiful picture of the confusion of a break up.

This song takes me back to the 'dating years' with my husband. We met very young and had to grow up together - often hurting each other along the way. We still think how amazing it is that we ended up together after all that we went through (that was more than 30 years ago now.) People hurt each other and are still drawn together just like the gravity in the song. Thankfully the hurting led to healing and a happy life together. But I love it when a song can touch me and parts of my past like this one.

I agree with 'cheerbabe'. This song makes me cry every time I hear it. It's so beautiful and the meaning is just exactly the situation I'm in! :/
A girl loving a guy but knowing she can't have him. Knowing that he loves her back only makes everything so much more difficult and though she knows that moving on is what's probably best, every time she tries she finds herself back at him because she just can't let go. Her loving him is only hurting her 'Set me free, leave me be' but she can't help hanging on to the hope that maybe one day things will change and it will be possible for them to be together.

I'm going through this right now. Its getting better though. She fell for a guy and he didn't catch her. But now that its over she wants him more than ever cause he doesn't want her. Lots of things make her think of him. She doesn't want these feelings but she gave him her heart, and he didn't give it back. She didn't have the intentions for the feelings she ended up with. He said things he shouldn't have said. That he didn't mean.

I have heard this song before but today I heard it differently.
If you are a christian you may be able to relate but the very beginning of the song says " something always brings me back to you, it never takes too long. " and I believe that is the same with me and the lord. Something always brings me back to him it never takes too long and I love that! :)

Gravity is about addiction ("u hold me without touch, u keep me without chains/... You're neither friend nor foe though i cant seem to let u go"). & how once you're addicted -no matter how far you are in overcoming it ("here i am & i stand so tall, just as im supposed to be") - the temptation/craving ("i never wanted anything so much than to drown in your love & not feel your reign") will remain with you ("... You're on to me & all over me") until you die ("no matter what i say or do, i still feel u here 'til the moment i'm gone").

She sent this song to me as a way of telling me where things stood with her/us. She had moved on, found someone else, someone she married. I was married too when we met and despite our attempts, we fell deeply in love. We both have tried to move on with our lives, along the way, falling back into each other's gravity. And now, this song was the last real thing she sent me and we haven't really communicated since. I listen to this song as a way to hear her, because we cannot and do not talk anymore. It's a beautiful song and a perfect way to describe our feelings for each other and how easy it is to fall back into each other's gravity. Rv, I hope you still know. Fb.

Gravity is the force of love that is always pulling you back. Gravity is the love that you don't wanna feel because it's a heavy burden riding endlessly on your heart and body. Emotionally smashing you down until you can't move. Making you feel as if you bones and muscles are obsolete because regardless of how hard you try to get away you're stuck there until the moment you're gone.

Gravity, what can we say of it. So many thoughts coming to m head, I don't like to sound poetic but it is something I can{t help. Gravity is waight, but also lightness both at the same time, is something weird I can completly explain gtravity is something tht free us something that is or chain, it can bring us bck to earth or take us trhiough the ath of dreams.

Its actually about an addiction. You're having an addiction that at first is your friend, but is also your foe turning you into something you don't want. Set me free leave me be, you want to addiction off of you. Something always brings me back to you. Something like a hard time (for me personally an eating disorder) I always have something that bring me back to my addiction. I know though, for fact, this song is about addiction.

It means about a person who is deeply in love yet, does not know how the other person feels about her. She is so in love with this person that she does not want to share this feeling to anyone, because it will only break her heart and will hurt her pride. She may find someone someday that will take the pain away, but the memories will always be there. It cannot be erased. This song does apply to both gender.

This song can mean so many different things in our lives. As a recovering addict and a cancer survivor of bladder cancer. Drugs are so addicting for the people that have that mentality of addictions and my family is full of them. I do remember the first steps trying to come down off meth or speed whatever you want to call it, and I tell you it gets you best when your down and out of that drug. This drug does everyone the same to all of us. Please watch this on so you think you can dance you will be heart broken after that. God bless you all I hope if you have those chains holding you back get help, God bless.

Hmm I love this song this is totally where I am. Everybody always has a different view well this is mine. I think its about a girl who loves a guy and he has said that he has loved her to, but for whatever reason they are not together she is unsure about the situation and wants to get out but can't because she wants to make sure that its what he wants because she really love him that's why its (set me free leave me be) because she can't move on until she knows its over. Every time she builds up the strength he just says one thing and her strength is gone. Then she is back in the same spot she was again well that's my interpretation.

When you love someone, especially if that person has a stronger personality, sometimes you begin to lose yourself. You forget who you were before them, lose sight of what made you, focussing instead on the relationship. You gravitate towards that person's strength.
It is only as that relationship begins to reach its end that you realise that you define yourself by your relationship and that alone you no longer know who you are. Your strength is "fragile" and the "gravity" of the relationship keeps pulling you back in, towards the safety of what you know, even though this may not be the best thing for you and you are probably living a false reality. Being alone is frightening and difficult but also exciting much like life would be without gravity.

They played this song on the hills and I thought it really fit because audrina always goes back to justin bobby but he's really bad for her, he never calls and he puts her down and breaks her heart all the time, but she can't stay away from him because she's convinced that she loves him and he loves her and they should be together but something just isn't right. I think this is a beautiful song her voice is so pretty.

This song is all about the fact that there is this girl that's so in love wid a guy. And it seems that through all the things they went trhough they never dated and that's the only things she thinks about being wid him. But wid the time she realises that she has to let him go but she can't. When he talks to her he makes her fell so special but she clearly knows that he is the one and that she has to wait for him to wake up and realiz that she was the one too(L)(L).

Can I say that I finally found a song that I have been searching for that is my life? This song is something that I listen to over and over again, it is everything that I have felt and will feel for the rest of my life. There is not a day that goes by that he is not in my head, wondering if. He holds me, he touches me in my dreams, keeping those chains. I have never wanted anything so much as his love, the time that we were together. I know that I have to get on with life, forget, but something always brings me back.
