It is about remembering a more care free time in the woman's life when she was on the road (physical and/or metaphorically) with nothing to lose and everything to gain.
1. "somebody's hands that felt like mine": is a younger self, hence the familiarity.
2. "so breathe": has space and/or time to take a breath and/or moment.
3. "just yellow lines and tire marks": could be an actual open road but think of a road in your head, it has endless turns, exits and forks. Possibility's are endless.
4. "and where i stood, was where i was, to be": that there was no place in particular that she needed to be physically and/or emotionally.
5. Second verse explains point 4 above, that she had no responsibility and/or attachments holding her down.
6. "before i knew which life was mine": meaning before she decided her path in life (a time before deciding on education, career, to have kids ext.).
7. "before i left the child behind me": before she left behind childish (or child like [there is a difference]) ways.
8. "and stars that up like candle lights, i make my wish but mostly, i believed": refers to a younger more naive self that thought that anything is possible.
9. "decided nothing good in dying": a double negative of sorts (nothing and dying) meaning live life.
