They crowned the sun. Maybe animal mass suicide happens when nature intuitively realizes that a species is going to die anyway for example because of pollution, so these animals decide to end the suffering. And these birds crowning the sun (the view that one could get as they fell from the sky) make the impression of giving a sad and frightening offering to the only thing always remaining the same even when mankind destroys nature on the earth. The sun. This is not a logical interpretation, just the thoughts that came to my mind.
And we are them, the day birds, the greying herds. Only our suicide is like a rampage, taking everything else with us into perdition. And this is our choice, as stated in the video to the song: mankind is fully responsible for his nature and his choices.

I feel that it is about the increasing harm capitalism is causing to our planet, but also the increase in totalitarian governments. I feel the song is calling for revolution, for example the lines.
'we're the day birds.
Deciding to fly against the sky.
Within our dreams, we all wake up.
To kiss the ones who are born to die'. The act of flying against the sky suggests breaking through the hegemony that is deeply engrained within us all.

This is just a thought, but "they crowned the son" can also be "they crowned the son," referring to jesus' crown of thorns. To me this song, like other songs by serj, has the central idea that our idea of civilization is in fact not civilized at all. From the conquering of indigenous peoples and wildlife, to the outstanding depletion of natural resources, to the reflection of first-world greed demonstrated by the growing edipemic of obesity while others are starving, to ongoing and meaningless wars, we are destroying our world along with ourselves. Harakiri. There isn't much scientific study on animal suicide, but perhaps serj meant to tie this form of harakiri in with what us humans are ignorantly causing. Well done, mr. Tankian.
