Shep And The Limelites – Daddy's Home lyrics
You're my love you're my angel
You're the girl of my
dreams
I'd like to thank you for waiting patiently
Daddy's home your daddy's home to stay

How I've waited for this moment
To be by your side
Your best friend wrote and told me
You had teardrops in your eyes
Daddy's home your daddy's home to stay

It wasn't on a sunday (monday and tuesday went by)
It wasn't on a tuesday afternoon (all I could do was cry)
But I made a promise that you treasured
I made it back home to you

How I've waited for this moment
To be by your side
Your best friend wrote and told me
You had teardrops in your eyes
Daddy's home your daddy's home to stay
Daddy's home to stay
I'm not a thousand miles away
Daddy's home to stay
I'm gonna be here come what may

My father drove truck and was on the road for weeks and sometimes months at a time. I was Daddy's Girl and missed him terribly when he was gone. This song was my theme song when he would finally get home from long trips. When he quit trucking, I thought he was home to stay. Only to leave a few weeks later to live somewhere else. All a girl could do was dream. "Daddy's Home To Stay".

I mean it seems pretty clear from the first few lyrics that this song is for a romantic partner, and that he’s been away for awhile unwillingly (military service?). It seems like they’re young and unmarried because she’s “waited patiently” and has a “best friend” that’s writing him (along with a lot of other people who were writing letters to a local serviceman, probably?). The weird part to me is calling himself “daddy,” under these circumstances, but I know that in some American subcultures folks have called their girlfriends/wives “mama” (i.e. “sexy mama”), and boyfriends “daddy” (I.e., “daddy like!”) etc., so...different strokes and all that.

How about the dad has to work away from home and there were no other means and ways to provide for his family. Finally, he had the priviledge to work closer to home, resulting in him not having to work far from home any longer. He then shows appreciation for this very right he has to spend quality time with his family by writing and singing this song for them.

We're an aging couple; 45 years marriage with our 'fair' share of trials & tribulations.
I woke up this am thinking of how really blessed we are and have been, aware of so many others; family, friends & strangers who have & are suffering much more than we ever have.
After sharing this thought with my spouse and enjoying the moment in each others arms, feeling the need for the familiar union of our flesh, I felt so 'at home'. And the words just came spontaneously; "Daddy's home."
What a wonderful sense of peace & contentment. Then, in the 'afterglow', we remembered that these words were part of the lyrics to a nostalgic melody we'd heard & hummed many times in our past.
Now, in reading the actual lyrics, I can relate to the feeling of separation and loneliness that we feel from time to time when separated from the ones we love & appreciate due to circumstance or misunderstanding.
Thank you all who share your beauty & grace.

I believe this song is about a drunken father abandoning his children for a life of drunkenness and shame. Finally after years of living in squalor he loses everything. With nowhere to go, he turns to the only people he knows that he can use to his advantage, the children he doesn't care about. He returns home acting as if he cares about his children but really all he wants is a bed to sleep in and some food to eat.
