Shinedown – What A Shame lyrics
Two packs of cigarettes a day
The strongest whiskey
Kentucky can make
That's a recipe to put a vagabond
On his hands and knees

I watched it all up close,
I knew him more than most
I saw a side of him he never showed
Full of sympathy for a world that
Wouldn't let him be

That's the man he was,
Have you heard enough?

[Chorus:]
What a shame, what a shame,
To judge a life that you can't change
The choir sings, the church bells ring
So, won't you give this man his wings?
What a shame to have to beg you to
See we're not all the same
What a shame

There's a hard life for every silver spoon
There's a touch of grey for every shade
Of blue
That's the way that I see life
If there was nothing wrong,
Then there'd be nothing right
And for this working man they say could
Barely stand
There's gotta be a better place to land
Some kind of remedy for a world that
Wouldn't let him be

That's the man he was,
Have you heard enough?

[Chorus:]
What a shame, what a shame,
To judge a life that you can't change
The choir sings, the church bells ring
So, won't you give this man his wings?
What a shame to have to beg you to
See we're not all the same
What a shame

God forgive the hands that laid you down
They never knew how, but your broken
Heart can break the sound
And change the season
Now the leaves are falling faster,
Happily ever after
You gave me hope through your endeavors
And now you will live forever

[Chorus:]
What a shame, what a shame,
To judge a life that you can't change
The choir sings, the church bells ring
So, won't you give this man his wings?
What a shame to have to beg you to
See we're not all the same
What a shame, what a shame
'Cause we're not all the same
What a shame, what a shame
'Cause we're not all the same

What I find most amazing about is the line '((What a shame, to have to beg you)) we're not all the same. '
This is, sadly, so true, although we are supposed to be created equal, we certainly aren't all the same. And many seem to forget that.
And to judge someone because of what he is, even when you couldn't do any better if you were in the same position is something people like to do, since it is so easy.

I think this song goes pretty deep. It's about a vagabond that died, and the church community won't give him a proper funeral.
My friend's family are all atheists and are not baptised, and when my friend's brother died, the church community wouldn't give them a funeral, and wouldn't allow them to bury him on the cemetery. They literally had to beg to be allowed to bury him, but he didn't get a proper funeral. In this song, the situation is pretty similar.
It's a shame you have to beg to get equality, and that people get judged for things that can't be changed.

This song is about the worth of people and the author of the song giving credit for the subject of the song (perhaps themselves) for being a good person despite being who they are (nonconventional). The highlighted section is about the charity for those that however unknowingly persecuted them, and a final send off sentiment.

The meaning I get is people who judges others by what they do that they think is not right or if it is better than theirs. Well when they judge someone with out taking their precious time to learn about them means their to lazy or they just don't care at all. Well for my opinion or even thought is " why do u judge someone when u don't care at all?! " that just doesn't seem right. When you don't care. You don't care. When you do care. You care. So why wont the people who don't care just leave them alone and keep your mouth shut. Ok? Is it that difficult lol. :)
