Sia – Elastic Heart lyrics
And another one bites the dust
Oh why can I not conquer love
And I might
have thought that we were one
Wanted to fight this war without weapons

And I
wanted it, I wanted it bad
But there were so many red flags
Now another one
bites the dust
Yeah let's be clear, I'll trust no one

You did not
break me
I'm still fighting for peace

I've got thick skin and
an elastic heart,
But your blade it might be too sharp
I'm like a rubberband until you pull too hard,
I may snap and I move fast
But you won't see me fall apart
Cause I've got an elastic heart

I've got an elastic heart
Yeah I've got an elastic heart

And I will stay up through the night
Let's be
clear, won't close my eyes
And I know that I can survive
I'll walk through fire to save my life

And I want it, I want my life so bad
I'm doing everything I can
Then another one bites the dust
It's hard to lose a chosen one

You did not
break me
I'm still fighting for peace

I've got thick skin and an
elastic heart,
But your blade it might be too sharp
I'm like a rubberband until you pull too hard,
I
may snap and I move fast
But you won't see me fall apart
Cause I've got an elastic heart

[x3]

I've got an elastic heart

Shia was the embodiment of thought and reasoning (adulthood) while Maddie was the embodiment of freedom and carefree nature (childhood) all in the mind (cage which can also be formed by society among other factors). The dance i believe was meant to portray that the two cannot always co-exist in harmony. While your mind wants to be free it is still restricted to reasoning, thus they fight.

Your reasoning fights your freedom and carefree nature, trying to tame and control it, but the mind will always long for freedom and thus will never be tamed no matter what angles or whatever methods you use (shia using chains against maddie where she resists and escapes, then he tries to use the gentle approach to which he was bitten). Reasoning will get angry and lashout at this side of you, but you cannot truly hurt or banish your free side no matter how much you want, but your free side can injure your reasoning quite easily but truly wishes not to (notice how many times Maddie kicked him and threw him against the cage, but Shia could barely touch her. His hands are cut and bruised from the countless fights, but Maddie barely has a scratch).

There are then times that reasoning and freedom are harmonious, resulting in bliss. They have truly accepted one another for what they are and are not. They realize they both need each other fundamentally. At this point your freedom will try to pull you into other things, but while your freedom is as it says, free, your reasoning and thought is not. At this point I believe that it was intentional that the cage gaps was indeed big enough for Shia to slip through, but it was all in his head why he couldn't truly leave (the cage). The freedom is there, urging you and tugging you to step outside your cage, showing you the way, but your reasoning is forever trapped in the cage that your mind created (to why tears formed for Shia in the end, he saw the way but he could never leave). Freedom is puzzled and wants to understand why you cant leave but cannot due to her nature. Reasoning wants to understand how freedom can leave but cannot due to his nature. And so it will be an everlasting fight.

The more I watched the video the more I understood why SIA chose those actors to play those roles. The expressions needed to convey those ideas is not something you come across everyday (especially the last scene). It truly is unfortunate that some of us see it as something twisted instead of the piece of art it is supposed to be. The video could have been dumbed down for easier viewing and understanding, but some of its meaning would be lost. I watched the video a couple times to pick up the subtle hints (freedom is not restricted by the cage. She sees the cage, she walks around in it but it never restricts her movement, she rarely even touches it lest for entering and exiting the cage. Reasoning on the other hand interacts with the cage quite frequently. He climbs it, shakes it, punches it to show his interaction with it.)

I find the video very accurately portrays today's world.

While I agree with some of what Katrinarivera said in explanations about the video I saw something a little different in the portrayal by Maddie and Shia, what I saw was Maddie playing the part of Sias untrusting side, the side that feels the need to protect herself, and flee when necessary and Shai playing the part of her that wants and reaches out for love and affection. When the two come together and Maddie gains an understanding of the part of herself she is at war with she tried to bring Shia out of the cage with her, the cage that she discovered she can leave at will, but the Shia aspect cannot leave the cage, much as he longs to. Perhaps both the lyrics and the portrayal of the war within Sia hits a bit close to home for me, Or, as with all expressions of art, we see what we can identify with.

At first I thought they reflected a father-daughter relationship in which the father abandons the daughter and she grows up trusting no man to love. The song sounds to me like a quarrel between lovers who constantly have issues, and the person speaking says that it's not the other person's fault. "You did not break me." But instead love has been a process of losing loved ones thinking they are the one who will stay.

The Elastic Heart depicts a heart that is used to loss and cannot be easily broken, but the current lover is the one that she has opened up to the most, and may be the one to break her despite of what the singer says. The fact that the author uses the words 'break me' and 'elastic heart' demonstrate that there are conflicting emotions and that despite the fact that she says she is elastic she may see herself as broken because she sees love as a conflict 'war' 'weapons' 'trust no one' and something she cannot conquer. The fact that she says her heart is rubber and may snap if you are too close reminds me of a bullet ricochet.

Despite what I feel from the song, I think there might be an underlying dark memory because I felt uneasy after listening to it for a while. Needless to say I loved the video and I don't see anything wrong with it but I did get nightmares after listening to the song for a while.

There are several separate meanings (which I will point out) and a spattering of vague symblism dispersed throughout the song that are intentionally inserted, as many poets and songwriters often do to spice up their verse with an artsy-fartsy nonsense that is supposedly meant to be provocative, but, for me, usually comes off as boring and tedious jibberish... as in this case. To decipher the separate meanings here, one must take heed of why the words were crafted, who wrote them and exactly what they mean in context. First off, the idea for the music video and then the dance choreography came afterward, and although they could provide more clues to what the lyrics mean and should be scanned for some meaning they might have little or no value in conveying the right message (meaning a message that is on point with the intended message conveyed in the lyrics). Because this was written for The Hunger Games. two separate ideas resonate... Katniss is meant as the "speaker" of these lyrics and she is talking to someone. Her main conflict is against the oppressive regime in that antiutopian story. so she could be talking to it (or those in power) when she says "you". However. a secondary conflict in that story is between her and her two potential love interests, so she could be talking to one or both of her would-be lovers. Taking into account how "artistic-fartistic" this Sia is and how little regard she shows for speaking plainly, Katniss could also be speaking to all three and maybe even the audience of that movie as well. One major clue, though, is when she states, "You did not break me... I'm still fighting for peace." which points to her talking to the oppressive regime. Although, in my experience, this concrete clue does not mean the poetic mind of Sia actually stayed on track having Katniss address her evil government throughout this song. It is, unfortunately, more likely that she careened off that track time and time again. Now, with all this in mind, taking into account all the crazy variables, from the provocative nonsensical mind of Sia, to the video producer's imaginative vision, through the costume designer's sense of fashion, the dance choreographer's flare for the dramatic and whacko religious zealots claiming there's a subliminal Satanic message of 'I love Lucifer' being sung to us all, watch that video again very carefully and I think you will come to the same conclusion I came to... It's a hot mess that has less meaning than a mattress tag. Thanks for reading and I'm so happy I could clear this all up for you all. Have a sensible day.

When I first watched it, I was thinking it could be about mental illness. It keeps him trapped, and he slowly goes insane.

My second thought was that it was about Addiction. He tries to get free, then wants it back, etc... a constant battle between the two. And the addiction always lures him back.

However, I agree with some comments here about it being a battle between your carefree side and your reasoning side.

It could be anything, whatever fits with you!

In the music video for "Elastic Heart" I see the man as an addict almost and maddie being the drug or the addiction it shows how when he lives with her(the drug disease whatever it was) its a struggle and he's always battling his mind and against the addiction. When maddie escapes the cage it shows how broken ad alone the man in the cage is. In one sense I view the cage and a mind setting for the man with the addiction meaning he feels like he's trapped and there's no way out. I viewed this video again after writing that point of view and I saw something else, I saw maddie as almost a spirit type thing. The man was trying to grow up and get rid of his sense of childlike ways. So him fighting maddie reminded me that adults are trying to grow up but once they have grown up there is no going back (the part when maddie makes it out of the cage).

In Sia's "Elastic Heart", the cage (in the video) represents the skull or brain. The two dancers inside represents the problem. Both of them are fighting against each other even when they're the same. They have to achieve their heart's desire in order to 'be free' from the cage. It's literally about, for example, you fighting yourself. One of the problem is solved (the girl escapes) yet it comes back, to help solve the emotions the other problem is struggling with. Since that problem still can't face reality and conquer their emotions, they can't be freed.

This song was written for the Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack. It is about Katniss and her feelings for the people around her whom she loves; Prim, Peeta, Gale, her mother, etc. It's how on the outside, she's so tough and brave and strong, and she keeps up these walls around her heart to protect herself from heartbreak and loss, yet she feels as if her heart is vulnerable to love, especially to Prim, and gradually, as she falls for Peeta.

Personally (since this is in the "Hunger Games Catching Fire Soundtrack", I shall base it off that) I think that a person, or Katniss, is struggling with their life problems. They have just been through something horrible, and they are struggling to get on with life (Katniss won the hunger games and is struggling) and they realise they have started something (she started a rebellion). They are being relied upon and now they have to go through something horrible again (Katniss gets reaped into the quell). All of that, and Katniss is worried about who she loves; Gale or Peeta. She can only take so much before her "rubber band" snaps. When Gale reveals D12 is gone, her band fully snaps. But then she tells herself, no matter what, I will fix this, no matter how long it takes. Basically, someone is struggling, being relied upon, and worries he/she can never be fixed.

I think that Sia is talking about an inner struggle that is pushing and pulling at her. A side she recognizes as her strength and perseverance, the other pulling her down. I think this song is beautiful because everyone has this inner battle happening, a relatable song. Using elastic as a way to show her being unbreakable to herself. The push and pull reaches a point of snapping back, but coming back to herself.

One of the best break up songs ever. Like this song is. So. True.

My boyfriend. Well ex now but we fought constantly and he had no respect for me and he didn't care for me he treated me like I was nothing and it hurt so bad to think that he could be so mean and this song describes everything I was and am still feeling.

That's the thing about music it's open to anyone's interpretation. Everyone's right as long as its your vision of the story in the song then your right but once you pretend to see something that you don't see that's when your wrong. I think everyone's interpretation of the song/dance is pretty good and highly likely. I think songs like these are meant to have double meanings (or more) you are all so creative I don't think I could be that creative.

This song is about not being able to let go. Sia is trying to fight against the sides of her brains. Maddie is trying to be the freedom trying to the Sia to come and be free. Shia, who is playing the other version of Sia, wants to go but can't get away from the cage holding them back.

It's from "Hunger Games: Catching Fire". And I believe this song depicts her time in the arena. Think about it. "Another one bites the dust dust" it's in every verse. And I also agree with the whole 'inner child and the reasonable side of you having a conflict in a cage' but I think Sia wrote this for the hunger games and it actually has no deep meanings. Sorry guys. And peeta's thoughts in the arena are being sung by The Weeknd. I really love this song. Don't understand why people think it's sick. But that's the thing ryt. People need to shamed things which are beyond beautiful. Anyway, love all Y'alls opinion makes me proud of being human.

I find all of these different opinions and views to be very mind opening and interesting. I however think that the cage represents Sia's being and or heart. The little girl represents the inner child. The man represents Sia's ego and inner strength of herself. As the video shows the child though fragile and small is biting and attacking ego having a huge affect on his trust yet continues to try and gain childhoods trust. Both are unsure of each other but need each other to exist. Domestics or abuse take huge part in childhood and for so long wants to be in harmony with ego but ego has been hurt to many times for so long that when the child tries to help ego out he's to big to leave he's trapped. Long story short I think the whole thing lyrics video and all outline Sia's experience of childhood being hurt which has hurt her ego and is trapped and forced to live with the fact forever no matter how badly she wants to be happy and loved. The past can't be changed and the fact that her ego has been hurt for so long during childhood she is developed into who she is and it's too late. Love can't be conquered because she hasn't conquered herself. Something is missing and who ever kept it from her during her developing years is the one she is saying *you did not break me* she still loves although she wasn't loved and that she is strong still fighting for herself to find what's missing but can't because who ever she loves end up not loving her because of her inner issues she developed from childhood which has hurt her for so long trust and childhood are there but can't ever be free together.

I feel for Sia I myself have the same outline beautiful video says my life all at once way deep and moving.

Just such an unbelievably moving video clip in all aspects. To start with, we see the "inner child" as the predator, constantly taunting and chasing the "adult". As someone said before, the "inner child never interacts with the cage because she would not see it as a cage as she herself is able to escape, but she cannot abandon her adult self. So the game continues...

This video has some dark undertones however it does not help that through the song she sings the name "Lucifer" subliminally. It is funny, once you know it is there you can't not hear it.
Don't believe me, go and listen again.
With that in mind the meaning of the video suddenly takes on a rather sinister context; Sia is being tempted by the creature before him (to give in to his darker aspects - violence, anger etc), it cloaks itself in innocence but shows its true nature when pushed, inflicting many wounds. No matter how hard he fights it continually torments him and when he is at his weakest most exhausted state he surrenders and it gently leads him to his death.

I believe that she is in a deep struggle with this man because she loves him deeply and dearly, but he takes her heart for granted and may bring her harm. She is in torment over him as well as in herself, you can see in her actions, and feels in caged by this love she has for him. You can see also how frustrated he is with her over the love she has for him and is unable to express it, therefore acts as if he is on the verge of insanity. Her being young in this video shows her little girl weak side, but her actions are saying no matter how bad I love you I will be the woman and walk away... as much as it hurts her to hurt over him and at the same time watch him hurt over losing her. The video might be more complete if it showed her walking out of the cage and turning into a woman as she let said him go.

What I thought she was in a relationship with the man then he tears her heart out and she No longer trust men but every time her heart was stretched they didn't see her break and that's what makes her elastic and it repeats over again til she is fully elastic to forgive men. You know the meaning forgive-n-forget. Ladies and gentlemen the song for forgive-n-forget. Your So needed welcome.

The main character of the song has a bad relationship with her father and only wants peace, but the father is abusive and always held down by depression. She is constantly trying to settle peace with her father but failing every time.

Sometimes the father tries to reach out to her and establish peace, but it's at the worst times where the main character doesn't trust her father. They always seem to reach out to each other when the other isn't in the mood to try and reason with the other. They still love each other in a father-daughter way but sometimes cannot trust each other.

At times the main character is very afraid of the father and does all she can to avoid him no matter how much he tries to reach out, but in the end he always ends up threatening her and sometimes even beating her, thus creating constant fear of him. At times where the main character does reach out to her father not afraid, it's at the worst times usually and ends up just losing once again.

At the end it signals the one time the main character manages to reason with her father and attempts to get him out of his depression (the cage in the music video) but she's the only one that's thin enough to fit through it, and no matter how hard she tries she cannot pull him out of the cage. He ends up going into rage, and the main character, safe and out of the depression cage, just watches him in sadness and pity. The father shows his kind side once again, right before he dies in his cage of depression.
