State Radio – Keepsake lyrics
One gonna heal my body, another gonna heal my pain
One gonna settle me down then bring me back up again
I'm gonna put my family back together again
One gonna hold my woman, another gonna hold my job
One gonna help me get up, another gonna help me stop
One gonna help me talk right, one gonna lay me down to sleep

(Humming)

One gonna hold my thoughts and another gonna hold my bones
One gonna keep me warm and another gonna keep me cold
One gonna bring religion right from a Coleman stove
One gonna help me keep and another gonna help me take
One gonna run me down, a hail of bullets in the wake
You're gonna keep my soul it was yours to have long ago

(Humming)

One gonna buckle my belt around the ceiling pipe
One gonna buckle my knees and one gonna lock them up tight
One gonna hold a pen while you drag my arm across the page
One gonna hold my memory another gonna close the door
One gonna leave me restless another wanting more
You're gonna keep my soul it was yours to have long ago

(Humming)

I'm almost positive it's about depressed guy who need to take pills to get through everyday life. He says what each pill will do for him I. E "One gonna settle me down then bring me back up again". Though later it seems to change to him commuting suicide and he refers to the "one" as himself and then later a person remembering him. This is because he says "One gonna buckle my belt around the ceiling pipe" which eludes to him hanging himself with his belt. Then he sings "One gonna hold my memory another gonna close the door" which could mean the police would find him dead, record what happened, and then close the case or the "door". And lastly his love with have his soul.- well that's just my interpretation hope it helps.

In general I think it's about the dual nature of life, the yin and yang, the forces constantly pulling us in opposite directions. These constant conflicts are at the heart of our human experience. Good v evil, light v dark, intellect v emotion, love v hate etc. Good art, literature, poetry and music cause us to self-reflect on those conflicts and how best to handle them. I love these lyrics for what they make me realize about my own life.

Its a first person view of what the man is thinking before commiting suicide. He has obviously done enough pills and drugs that he thought he would have been dead by now but he is still living and so its time for him to do it by whatever means necessary.

When I finally have enough balls to do it this song will be on repeat when they find me.

To me this song means what you need it to mean. It could be about:
    1. Finding those reasons to live when everything in your body is letting go. 2. The struggle of man versus self, and resisting the urge for retaliation. Against oneself or against another. 3. Finding ways to accept what has happened in the past, and learning to move forward. 4. One's recognition of life, and that it is about being selfless instead of selfish.

I used to think this was about pills too but listening to it again recently I've started to think it's about partners or lovers. People that have come into his life and done/been many different things for/to him, but none of them are or will ever be as important as the one who has his soul.
