Steven Curtis Chapman – Busy Man lyrics
I know a man named Billy
He's got almost everything
Three stories, two cars, one swimming pool
And some broken parts of an empty heart
And I'm thinkin'...

CHORUS 1
Billy, Billy, Billy, you're a very busy man
But you're running with your eyes closed
You could be missing life all along the way
And you'd never even know it
You're a busy man Billy, Billy, you're a busy man
Just too busy man

You've got a lot of nice things there Billy
But they've cost you more than you know
'Cause what is it really worth can you tell me
If you're gaining the world but you're losing your soul
And I'm thinkin'...

CHORUS 2
Billy, Billy, Billy, you're a very busy man
But you're running with your eyes closed
Looks like you traded life for the things you have
Not the thing you really wanted
You're a busy man Billy, Billy, you're a busy man

BRIDGE
So when the day is over
And the lights go out
Do you ever stop and wonder
Wonder what it's all about
Wonder what it's all about
Wonder what it's all about
Hey Billy do you ever wonder
What it's all about?

CHORUS 1

FADE
Slow down busy man take a look around you
When it's all said and done tell me what's it gonna come to

"What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?" - Mark 8:36

One of the common tendencies in life is for us to take it for granted. A lot of people work hard for material possessions, without ever asking why they haven't found fulfillment or when they will have enough. As this song puts it, they fail to "wonder what it's all about".

Yet this is the lifestyle that society points us toward. We are so drawn into this mindset that we're afraid that if we even stop to ponder if there's "more to this life", we will be seen as unusual or "holier-than-thou". We're afraid to ask these important questions, so when we feel the tugging to pay attention to where our life is going, we try to block it out with more work.

While dedicating our lives to acquiring possessions and the status they bring may make us "cool" in the eyes of the world, they only bring pain for us personally. Divorce, estrangement from friends and family, and stress are all unexpected results of materialism, and they can ruin our lives from the inside out. When your kingdom crumbles and all your dreams fall apart, the world will quickly go from admiring you to condemning you. And worse than than that, you will have run the risk of making the terrible decision to trade your soul for the world and all that it offers.
