The Devil Wears Prada – Home For Grave lyrics
The normal man, promised all things.
Brought into this, taken by pain.
He mistook home for grave.

The normal man, filtered by hate.
Living to pay, buying what's fake.
He mistook home for grave.

It's not what we're made to be.
So why'd he do it?
I guess he just did not know.

I guess we just do what we're told.
The anthem cries, but why listen?
I guess we just do what we're told.
Betrayed again, betrayed again.

What began as life for him
Was only sorrow, was only shame.
It's like the story of disgrace.
Fraught with peril every day.

So why'd he do it?
I guess he just did not know.
Given nothing, left so lonesome.
He mistook home for his grave.

It's not what we're made to be.
So breathe, breathe, breathe, breathe.

I guess we just do what we're told.
The anthem cries, but why listen?
I guess we just do what we're told.
Betrayed again.

What began as life for him
Was only sorrow, was only shame.
It's like the story of disgrace.
Fraught with peril every day.

I guess we just do what we're told.
Betrayed again, betrayed again.
I guess we just do what we're told.
The normal man passed away.

Dead and gone.

The song references the biblical book of Job, Chapter 17. The song refers to man allowing himself to suffer in order to just 'do what [he's] told', and therefore losing all hope because of it. The only thing man has left is his heart, all hope is lost, and as that disappears he questions his desire to continue living, to continue holding on.

The album "8:18" holds many references to the book of Job, in which a man is unjustly punished, regardless of his faith, and still has faith in God. The man, Job, is given up on by everybody, yet still crawls along the ground. The album itself is a reference to the book of Jeremiah 8: 18 "You who are my comforter in my sorrow, my heart is faint within me" and charts man's constant cries of anguish to a God that appears distant and unwelcoming. While Roots/Branches speaks of the follies of government and melodramatic preaching and the sin of greed, and Dead Throne speaks of a strong faith in the face of adversity, 8: 18 represents the challenges within faith, or life in general, and how help and God seem distant.
