The singer is asking the angel to look homeward. Do the folks I used to know still remember me” Does his lady miss and dream of him. He must be deceased and asking the angels to check on his loved ones hoping they still love and miss him. That seems to be the logical reason behind the song since we all want to be remembered, missed and loved when we are gone.

Chris, the military separation explanation is a good one but I prefer an alternative that the lyrics are those of a lover asking an "angel" in heaven to "look homeward" and intercede in communicating with his deceased lover in the afterlife - even asking the angel to give that person a kiss for him. One of the saddest and most beautiful songs ever written. I love the Johnny Ray version of it. It will break your heart!

Perhaps the above people should read the fine first novel by Thomas Wolfe to understand the song. A young man on the road from his rural home is thinking back to those he left behind. The angel in this case is in the cemetery of the town the wandering young man came from and there are references to the statue throughout the book.

"Look Homeward Angel" is about A military person trying to get information from home. Prior to the tech age the deployed military had to communicate with their mind, heart and soul.
The mail delivery was the most important activity of the day. The mail brought all the news from home, and the song comforted the military man as well as those it was shared with.
