Three Days Grace – I Am Machine lyrics
Here's to being human
All the pain and suffering
There's beauty in the bleeding
At least
you feel something

I wish
I knew what it was like
To care enough to carry on
I wish I knew what it was like
To find a
place where I belong, but

I am machine
, I never sleep
I keep my eyes wide open
I am machine, a part of me
Wishes I could just feel something
I am machine, I never sleep
Until I fix what's broken
I am machine, a
part of me
Wishes I could just feel something

Here's to being human
Taking it for granted
The highs and lows of living
To getting second chances

I wish I knew what it was like
To care about what's right or wrong
I wish someone could help me find
Find a place where I belong, but

I am machine, I never sleep
I keep my eyes wide open
I am machine, a part of me
Wishes I could just feel something
I am machine, I never sleep
Until I fix what's broken
I am machine, a part of me
Wishes I could just feel something

It wasn't supposed to be this way
We were meant to feel the pain
I don't like what I am becoming
Wish I could just feel something

I am machine, I never sleep
I keep my eyes wide open
I am machine, a part of me
Wishes I could just feel something
I am machine, I never sleep
Until I fix what's broken
I am machine, a part of me
Wishes I could just feel something

This song is basically sequel to human race. In human race he says that he'd rather be machine rather than human and the line saying "I'm sick of running" really suggests that this person no longer wants to be human. "I Am Machine" shows how once this person lost their humanity the realized what they gave up to become a machine.

He wishes he could feel anything. He doesn't care what it is. He has almost no emotions and he can't sleep until what he needs to do is done. He feels like he is a machine due to his sociopathic tendencies and he is suicidal. He wants to feel though. No matter the loss of sleep.

I have never heard more wrong decoding of lyrics.
This album is clear nothing but Cybernetics, every song is about cybernetics of human mind!
I am machine is number one proof of that but first song is human!
Song is about sublime Gothic philosophy Gnostic cybernetics (the death schools of Hindus/Buddhism and Norse/Vikings religions)
The pillars of cybernetics and sending of souls to the afterlife by repairing there damaged.

There are 2 very distinct interpretations that I have made about these lyrics.

The first: The band could be singing about drug use and addiction. Meth specifically destroys the human psyche and the chemicals of the brain. Other substances causes symptoms of delirium, lost focus, insomnia, and oftentimes emotional extremes. Deep despair, flying high on "cloud nine", or absolute, unadulterated numbness. The fight for sobriety and control could be quite apparent in the lyrics, after all, recovery is in essence fixing what's broken.

The second: The band could be singing about how soldiers are trained. Going days upon days of no sleep or minimal sleep, creates a sense of numbness. So much in fact that if faced with combat, they're trained to push through a barrage of flying bullets, regardless of how many times and where they are hit or how much blood they lose.

In both instances, there is some loss of a sense of what's right and wrong. Addicts are often driven to unspeakable crimes for their next fix, soldiers are virtually robotic in that they must be on auto pilot when given an order that they must carry out.
As for what the song really means. Only the band knows!

He is or was a 'cutter'. He is trying to express the hopelessness and rage that 'cutters' feel. He knows this is not the way he was designed (different story there) and longs for the normal functioning state. He is also aware that he doesn't know the answer to his problem and this is where the rage comes in. This song is a wake-up call for the generations that have come and gone and dealt with this mental/emotional illness. "Plumb" also did a wonderful and eye opening song about being a 'cutter'. There are subsequently some aspects of aspergers and autism inherent in these lyrics. One may wonder if it is the artist himself or a friend they are singing about.

This song made me think of old russia, or at least the version we were taught here in the us. There is some truth to it as today I am married to a bulgarian girl and have met many russians. While not to the extreme we were led to believe they are/were like machines, showing emotion is a weakness in their culture. Right and wrong thoughts are pushed aside by the need to survive and climb the ladder, being 2nd is the same as losing. Even if its 2nd in a class of a thousand.

As another comment said, this is a sequel to "Human Race".
In "Human Race" he says that he is sick of being an human, now here he says that he wishes he could feel something, because now he's a machine. When you're a machine, you don't have the "highs and lows of living", that's because you don't feel anything.
"I wish I knew what it was like, to care about what's right or wrong" that talks about the mind of the ones who lost their humanity, who don't actually care about nothing, and just do their work.

I think this song clearly emphasizes a lack of feeling. Whether that's from horse tranquilizers, or mind numbing warfare is debatable. However, what is obvious is that the subject of the song is starting to feel nothing and clearly does not like.
The true title of this song should be "The Secret Regrets of a Sociopath".

I think "I am machine, I never sleep, I keep my eyes wide open! I am machine, a part of me Wishes I could just feel something!" Means he is doing the same thing over and over again and he's not aloud to change or be himself (but that's just me).
