Todd Rundgren – Hello, It's Me lyrics
Hello, it's me
I've thought about us for a long, long time
Maybe I think too much but something's wrong
There's something here that doesn't last too long
Maybe I shouldn't think of you as mine

Seeing you
Or seeing anything as much as I do you
I take for granted that you're always there
I take for granted that you just don't care
Sometimes I can't help seeing all the way through

It's important to me
That you know you are free
'Cause I never want to make you change for me

Think of me
You know that I'd be with you if I could
I'll come around to see you once in a while
Or if I ever need a reason to smile
And spend the night if you think I should

It's important to me
That you know you are free
'Cause I never want to make you change for me

Think of me
You know that I'd be with you if I could.
I'll come around to see you once in a while
Or if I ever need a reason to smile
And spend the night if you think I should

(think of me)

It's about a man that has died and is watching over his first love. The something that doesn't last too long is life. He sees her a lot because he is watching over her, but he wants her to know that she is free. It is okay to move on with her life. He doesn't want her to change because he is gone. He wants her to love again. He also wants her to know he would be with her physically if he could. Spending the night is figurative for being there for her through the darkness. When she needs to smile. He just wants to know that she still thinks of him because he is always with her.

The man, let's call him Todd, is in love with someone who isn't in love with him. He knows this, and he's willing to deal with it. That's what he means when he says I take for granted that you just don't care. He tells her not to change because he can see that she's not going to anyway or at least not because he asks her.

He married somebody else and still loves her. They probably fooled around once but they both knew it wasn't right. Now he is having trouble getting her out of his mind and, against his better judgment, he called... No answer. Voicemail. Did he simply miss her (she's out)? Or is she in and won't answer the phone. He decides to leave a message...
And, BTW, the line is "Maybe I shouldn't think of you as MUCH".

When the song first came out, mid-seventies, my first love gave me this record. I moved and she stayed and although after forty years every time I hear this song, I think of her. Of course you never forget your first love, but for the life of me I still can not figure what she was trying to say to me through this song. I wonder if this song reminds her of me. I still love her always, and I thank my lucky stars that there are songs like this one that allows me those most cherishable moments of the memories of her.

Maybe I should'nt think of you as mine. Illustrating what the relationship was truly all about or a verbal dialogue would have taken place and the song writter would know where he stood and what he should have thought. The evidence would have been there. Seems likely that the author of this lyric made a half a* attempt a relationship which primarily focused on s* and which despite the relationship falling apart is still something that the writer would like access to. When the writer states that he would be with the subject of the song "if he could" one can only conjecture that if he had truly been "there" in the first place the song would not have been written.

I always thought this song was about being haunted by the memory of a lost love.
The years pass quickly when we realize we didn't try hard enough to find each again and return to the happiness we had when we were together. It seems to be about an unexpected lover's phone call stating, we blew it , it's too late and I miss you.
