Two Door Cinema Club – Sleep Alone lyrics
Know
My only goal is to see
When I'm only fast asleep
It takes more than strength to find
This piece of mind

So I'll hold, hold, hold, hold it close
To my heart beating with every step
Hold, hold, hold it close

He sleeps alone,
He needs no army where he's headed cause he knows
That they're just ghosts
And they can't hurt him if he can see them
And I may go
To places I have never been to just to find
The deepest desires in my mind

We,
We only know, what we see
Cause we're always fast asleep
Cause it's so hard not to believe
That we'll never know

Oh hold, hold, hold, hold me close
I've never been this far from home
Hold, hold, hold me close

He sleeps alone
,
He needs no army where he's headed cause he knows
That they're just ghosts
And they can't hurt him if he can see them
And I may go
To places I have never been to just to find
The deepest desires in my mind

It's in my head
And I have said
That I must be like him
He sleeps alone,
He sleeps alone
And one last chance
To make sense
Of what has long escaped us
He sleeps alone,
I sleep alone

He sleeps alone,
He needs no army where he's headed cause he knows
That they're just ghosts
And they can't hurt him if he can see them

And I don't know
If in the morning I will be here and if so
Let it be known
That I was worthy
I was worthy
I was worthy
I was

Okay, so me and a friend were brain storming. We've come up with two meanings. The first is if you think about the lyrics in a romantic sense (which was the first thing I thought of the first time listening through this song) its about being strong enough to be alone after however long he wasn't. And the terror brought on by being alone would normally need an army to face, if it were real. But the fact that hes telling himself he can do it, he can be alone, if he needs to be, is like. Incredible - and hes telling himself, if he can't make it another night, let people know, that even though he isn't now, he was worthy of being with whoever it was. And the way he says it even though he sounds so confident, is also broken. And then the last line just being cut into "i was" makes it sound like he got it caught in his throat by the fact that hes no longer good enough. Hes not worthy, but damnit, he was.
The second is its about chasing dreams. Most people are scared to chase them. Gotta get out of your comfort zone. But this dude. He knows that he can get there, he can reach that dream. He knows that the only barricade to his dreams is himself. The things that keep him from chasing those dreams are all imagined. He knows that the ghosts can't get him if he knows they arent real. And the narrator has chosen to be like that guy, to an extent. Hes not completely changed yet, hence why I don't know if ill be here in themorning. But he wants it to be known that if he isn't able to get that dream, if he isn't able to catch it, that he was worthy of catching it. Because at least he thought he could. Its not a sad song. Its a pride song. "im gonna go for it" and even if I don't get it, at least I did my best. Hes not gonna be one of them. Hes not gonna be the one that sits by and lets life take his dreams. Hes gonna make it. Hes gonna chase those dreams. And the last question, are you going to let it hold you back?

A lot of people are close, but Alex (the writer of the song) has said that this song is simply written about strange dreams that he'd been having.
Once the band had finished touring from their first album, they moved into a house together to begin writing on their second album. Alex was so used to moving time zones and having an irregular sleeping pattern that he wasn't actually able to comfortably sleep on his own in the same time zone for more than a week. So, apparently, he started keeping dream journals, and one night, he 'smoked a lot of pot' and had the strangest dreams he'd ever experienced, so he wrote a song about it. Hope this helped. :)

I believe this song is all about self discovery and going within yourself to discover what you true desires are. He is discovering his purpose, so many people walk around with their eyes closed and go through the motions, the narrator and the subject are both on their journeys, possibly at different stages to understand themselves. The subject is further along in his journey and may have made sacrifices, such as companionship (sleeping alone) and the narrator realises that he is headed down the same road. Or alternatively he is saying that the journey within ourselves is a journey that we have to take on our own.
