X Ambassadors – Unsteady lyrics
Hold, hold on, hold onto me
'Cause I'm a little unsteady
A little unsteady
Hold, hold on, hold onto me
'Cause I'm a little unsteady
A little unsteady

Mama, Come here
Approach, appear
Daddy, I'm alone
'Cause this house don't feel like home

If you love me don't let go
If you love me don't let go

Hold, hold on, hold onto me
'Cause I'm a little unsteady
A little unsteady
Hold, hold on, hold onto me
'Cause I'm a little unsteady
A little unsteady

Mother, I know
That you're tired of being alone
Dad, I know you're trying
To fight when you feel like flying

But
if you love me don't let go
If you love me don't let go

Hold, hold on, hold onto me
'Cause I'm a little unsteady
A little unsteady
Hold, hold on, hold onto me
'Cause I'm a little unsteady
A little unsteady

Hold, hold on, hold onto me
'Cause I'm a little unsteady
A little unsteady

I have a son with mental illness and to me this song sums up what it does to a family. So to me this would be sung from the perspective of my son. He knows he does wrong. He is constantly apologizing. We go through hell. He knows he IS unsteady but he also knows he needs us. We do feel alone because his issues make friendships hard and they affect the relationship between me and my husband. I know there are other meanings but this is what it means to me and it breaks my heart. Whenever I am so mad at him for the things he does I think of him begging for us to not let (him) go. Making it more sad is the progression of time with it starting out calling the parents mama/daddy and then mother/dad, showing nothing has changed over time.

I was thinking it was about his parents getting divorced. He's talking to both of their parents trying to bring them back together for his sake. "If you love me don't let go" saying you can fight through this for the happiness of your child. He also says "mother, i know you're tired of being alone" saying maybe she regrets leaving her husband. At the beginning of the song he sings "daddy, I'm alone 'cause this house don't feel like home". Implying that maybe he's living with his mom and it doesn't feel the same without his dad their. He's asking him to come back home.

The song is about the his truth (dad), her truth (mom) and the truth (child). Obviously what is going thru a child's mind when his or her parents are falling apart. Begging his parents to keep it together for him or begging one of the parent who's on the verge of giving up and the children doesn't understand how could a parent give up on his or own children. "Momma come here, appear approach" seems like a plead of a child who want's to be with his mother most of the time but for some reason, the mother keeps disappearing. Unsteady. "Daddy I'm alone, cause this house don't feel like home" cry of a lonely husband, and the children has to witnessed it. Unsteady. That made a child's foundation, a little unsteady. It's a sad song. Love the truth in this song.

I absolutely love this song. I first heard it 3 times in one day, at absolutely random times - I woke up hearing this on the clock radio, and then 2 other times during the day while in my car. I am in recovery from alcoholism and for me the lyrics speak to my need to be surrounded by the love and strength from my higher power. Recovery, at times, is an unsteady road, a rocky road. The pleas to Mother 'approach, appear', and to Dad to 'Fight when you feel like fly'n' are the pleas to my family to stick with me through my progress - if you love me don't let go - even though I might have pushed you away by my actions in the past. Hold on, Hold on to me, cause I'm a little unsteady. Give me the strength to take it one day at a time.

To me it means that a daughter (because I have daughters) that is having turmoil in her life and is unhappy in her home and she needs her mom or her dad to hold her up. Maybe her mom has gone to heaven and her daddy feels like flying away to heaven too. The daughter needs the memories of her mom and her dad to be strong to help her get thru her turmoils in life. This is a very deep song.

This song was the hardest thing I have had to deal with since my sons suicide. It was playing when my clock radio went off this morning. I felt like it was my son calling out to me, but it's too late to hold on to him. I wish that I would have heard it before he took his life. I am now haunted by it and have become even sadder than I thought a human being could be without actually dying of this grief.

The line "if you love me, don't let go" implies the absolute helplessness of the voice of the song. It's the only tool that voice has is to use the leverage of love in an attempt to prevent loss. This, through my eyes, is about a helpless child or individual whom is completely powerless fighting to not lose someone or themselves. It could be a child powerless to stop the separation of his/her family, or an older individual pleading to a higher power to spare a loved one (cancer, illness, etc.). It's a powerful song that is capable of relating on a deep level to personal loss of most who here it. We have all fought not to lose someone, whether it be to death, suicide, divorce, break up and so on. By naming it unsteady though, we all know that in time even this individual regained their balance and continues on today.

The music video depicts alcoholism. I believe the father. Fight when you feel like flying. I think means trying to stay sober when the desire is to numb with substances. Substance abuse is a family disease. Mom feels alone. The child feels helpless. Dad is using. The family system is unsteady as well.

Music interpretation is a wonderful thing... I feel it's about "Parental Alienation". The boy lives with his Father & it doesn't feel like home with Dad(without Mom present)anymore. He wants his Mother back, & pleads that she not let go despite the difficulties of being alienated from her son. The boy is confused, brainwashed, "Unsteady", & needs his mothers unconditional love/determination to hold on to him because he doesn't understand what's going on.

When I find herd this song I just thought it was a sad song. No, it's is more it's showing that the singer is feeling sadness. Like he's missing something. Personally I think it's about parents going through a divorce and he's just a poor child trying to tell them he's sad. He wants them to be together again. He's unsteady because all theses things are happening and he doesn't know what to feel. All he feels is sadness. The part "if you love me don't let go" say he wants his parents to hold on and try to work it out so he doesn't feel sadness. This is the best song I've heard from this artist. Also in the song he's talking to both of his parents tying to tell them he understands the pain and that he can feel the pain also.

When I first heard this song, the overall sadness and strong vocals stood out to me most. Then I started listening to it a lot, many times a day. I think the singer is losing someone, so he is unsteady about it. The whole song has a very melancholy fell to it, but it is still an amazing song. The line "If you love me, don't let go" emphasizes that someone is, or is intending to, leave him. This makes him unsteady, as he says in the song. This song is a plea, a cry for help in my eyes. I think that it is X Ambassadors best song yet. It is unlike many of their songs, this is slow and sad, and every other song is kind of fast and happy-ish.
