Fiddler On The Roof – Sunrise, Sunset lyrics
(tevye)
Is this the little girl I carried,
Is this the little boy at play
?

(golde)
I don't remember growing older,
When did they
?

(tevye)
When did she get to be a beauty,
When did he grow to be so tall?

(golde)
Wasn't it yesterday when they were small?

(men)
Sunrise, sunset (x2),
Swiftly flow the days.

(everyone)
Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers,
Blossoming even as we gaze.

(women)
Sunrise, sunset (x2),
Swiftly fly the years
,
One season following another,
Laiden with happiness and tears.

(tevye)
What words of wisdom can I give them,
How can I help to ease their way?

(golde)
Now they must learn from one another,
Day by day.

(perchik)
They look so natural together.

(hodel)
Just like two newlyweds should be.

(perchik and hodel)
Is there a canopy in store for me?

(everyone)
Sunrise, sunset (x2),
Swiftly fly the years,
Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers,
Blossoming even as we gaze
.
Sunrise, sunset (x2),
Swiftly fly the years,
One season following another,
Laiden with happiness,
And tears

The song is speaking of two young people who have reached that season for turning from childhood play and physical development. They have found someone to love and enter into commitment to each other for life. So quickly they have gone from infancy to adulthood and somehow...life was so busy and laden with happiness and tears, that the parents did not stop long enough to see the changes that were occurring. Time flies...one season following another, and suddenly their babies have become adults...and the cycle of life goes on...

Hm, this version is kind of different from the version that my choir teacher is teaching us in Choir. In the beginning, it's different; instead of "is this the little girl I carried" and "is this the little boy at play", it's "now is this little boy a bridegroom" and "now is this little girl a bride". Other than that I agree that it is a great and an original song. My teacher sang it in elementary school and thought it was pretty cool, pretty cool that he's making one of the 3 choirs perform it. Although I've never seen the movie "Fiddler On The Roof", I bet it's a classic, just like "The Wizard Of Oz".

I like that Fiddler On The Roof,, movie and it's songs because it's so practical and down to earth as the seasons. It portrays cultural traditions of one group of people. We all have traditions in our own background. The songs, I like are, Sunrise Sunset, Miracles Of Miracles, If I Were A Rich Man, Tradition, I like the Bottle Dance Too. Classic movies and songs like that stays with us forever, its life right .. or as one song says "TO LIFE"

This song is parents watching their kids newly married and very surprised how soon the years have flown by. They barely noticed they are getting older when they are already on their own.
This makes me notice of how little time parents have to influence and inspire their kids before they are parents themselves.

sang this in high school and performed in music man. heard it somewhere and just loved it because it expresses deep feelings about losing your child to something.similar to "we give them roots and wings." very hard to be a mom. when they grow up and leave you its hard. the man who sang it was a terrific music teacher.

This marvellous song shows the passing of Life, from childhood to adulhood. The Ray Conniff Singers were responsible for the best recording of it. They sang it interpreting every word of it and with an impecable diction and leggato, two factors that can only be found in singers who know to to sing.
